Background
The Background
FSG Communications has produced Africa Health journal for over
30 years. It was practical and relevant and copies were in much greater demand than we could supply. This led to discussions with the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to see if something altogether bigger in size and numbers could be produced. Funding was approved, and Mera was launched in September 2002.
The Challenge
Mera is not just an expanded journal, it also has an enhanced distribution. Via the
four elements of content; (international section, Africa Health &
African Health Sciences or Journal Choice,
and Diabetes International or The African Journal of Respiratory
Medicine; we know it has good content. But how do you get 12,000 copies into the hands of Africa's health professionals? Taking each country as a separate entity, we have set up a complex distribution web that incorporates the use of local mail as well as harnessing other means such as via Ministries, NGOs, professional associations, mission groups, and industry. It works and it is effective.
